There are as many definitions of philosophy as there are philosophers – perhaps there are even more. After three millennia of philosophical activity and disagreement, it is unlikely that we’ll reach consensus, and I certainly don’t want to add more hot air to the volcanic cloud of unknowing. What I’d like to do in the opening column in this new venture — The Stone — is to kick things off by asking a slightly different question: what is a philosopher?

I'm running xbmc 9.11 b1 on a Mac Mini 1,25 with Mac OS X 10.5 I have issues with playing videos from you tube (h.264) via the plugin. Here the video gets very slow but audio plays at normal speed. So the video is out of synch by 4-5 seconds and higher, In the video info OSD the error % has values above 2000% (don't know what error% means exactly) It is clear for me that this is because of the weak performance due to the outdated hardware . I figured out that when watching the same youtube video via Navi-x the video would be displayed fine but with a lower res. So I use this as a workaround, but I still have issues with other videos e.g. from ZDF mediathek. How do you deal with h.264 or highres videos on your macs ? Any workarounds or tweaks ? thanks for any feedback on this.

For some time I’ve been meaning to test my small collection of PDA/smartphone gadgets to see which of their methods of input was quickest. The iPhone’s software keyboard? The Newton’s handwriting recognition? Palm’s Graffiti? With the possible imminent arrival of a tablet from Apple that will save the world, it seemed a good time to get round to the test.

Political blog The Hill may have called the recent announcement by Peter Orszag, the White House budget director, that the government is saddled with "outdated technology" a "startling admission," but it sounds to us like old news. As of January 2008, the Bureau of Indian Affairs still lacked Internet access, and during the transition from campaign to presidency Obama spokesman Bill Burton described it as, "going from an Xbox to an Atari." According to Orszag, that outdated technology is a big reason why the government is often inefficient and ineffective. His statement was part of the kickoff for a summit between President Obama, his administration, and CEOs of several major technology companies. The goal of the summit is to develop a plan to shore up the existing technology gap that results in billions of wasted tax payer dollars. Of course, by the time any resulting initiatives manage to navigate the Washington bureaucracy the new technology being implemented will already be obsolete. [From: The Hill]
